Al Asmarat City: Governmental Effort to eliminate Slums

Al Asmarat City in Mokattam neighbourhood is one of the largest development projects in Egypt that went through three phases over six years to be built an area of 185 acres. The State provided housings unit fully equipped with new furniture, electrical appliances, and all the necessities of life for citizens living in the Egyptian slums. So far, the city has realized more than 15,000 families, each received free housing units, except for a monthly rent of no more than 400 pounds.

The first phase was constructed on an area of 65 acres and includes 6258 housing units at a cost of 850 million EGP and funded by the governorate budget and the Informal Settlements Development Fund (ISDF). The second phase was established with finance from the "Long Live Egypt" Fund on a 61-acres area at a value of EGP 700 million, and it includes 4,722 housing units. As for the third phase of Al Asmarat City, it’s completed on a 62-acres area, and the final outcome of the project was 18,420 housing units.

Al Asmarat City includes a number of service buildings attached to the project, such as a school complex for all educational levels, and nurseries. Along with medical centres and health units, sports centre and open playgrounds, police units, firefighting, ambulance and postal units, civilized markets, bakeries, training and maintenance centres, and a large theatre. Indeed, the Egyptian government not only seeks to provide apartments for new citizens but also maintains decent life amenities to ensure a better future.
